K.T Memorial Hospital provides a Virtual Consultation Service to support individuals who may require medical guidance but are unable to reach a health facility promptly.
The service is operated by licensed medical professionals stationed at the hospital headquarters, following Ministry of Health standards for clinical practice, documentation, and supervision.
This article outlines the purpose of the service, how it works, and how patients can access it responsibly.
GENESIS AND BACKGROUND OF THE SERVICE
The Virtual Consultation Department was established after observing recurring gaps in access to timely medical guidance across many parts of Uganda.
For several years, K.T Memorial Hospital received routine phone-call consultations from:
Patients who had travelled far
Relatives and caregivers of clients
Community members seeking advice
Individuals in remote districts with limited access to clinicians
Although these informal consultations often resulted in positive outcomes, several gaps were noted:
1. Lack of Documentation
Phone consultations did not provide room for proper medical record-keeping, continuity of care, or accountability required for follow-up consultations and clinical audits.
2. Limited Access to Qualified Clinicians in Many Areas
Patients frequently reported challenges accessing safe and reliable medical care in their communities, relying on drug shops or untrained personnel for primary assessment.
3. Uncoordinated Care with Local Facilities
Patients often sought help from pharmacies, clinics, laboratories, or imaging centres near their homes, yet there was no structured way to document results or coordinate care with the local facility.
4. Need for Professional Oversight
The Director of K.T Memorial Hospital identified a gap in proper documentation and accountability.
A formal, supervised system was required to ensure:
Standardised consultations
Secure record tracking
Consistent clinical guidance
Professional oversight in line with MoH regulations
Outcome
This led to the establishment of the Virtual Consultation Department, designed to strengthen access to medical care, support remote healthcare workers, and ensure documented, supervised, ethical consultation.
HOW THE SERVICE OPERATES
1. Duty and Supervision
All virtual consultations are conducted by licensed clinicians officially recruited under K.T Memorial Hospital.
Doctors must report on duty physically at the hospital headquarters during their scheduled consultation hours.
Consultations are performed under direct supervision, ensuring adherence to ethical and professional standards.
Each consultation ends with the doctor’s duty shift to maintain accountability and continuity.
2. Consultation Process
During the virtual session, the doctor will:
Obtain your medical history
Review symptoms
Request investigations where necessary
Interpret available laboratory or imaging results
Offer guidance based on national treatment guidelines
Document all clinical findings
Advise on physical review if required
3. Access Without Owning a Smartphone
Patients may access the service via:
A friend’s or neighbour’s smartphone
A nearby pharmacy
A local clinic or drug shop
A laboratory or imaging centre
An internet café
This ensures inclusivity for individuals without personal digital devices.
4. Use of Local Languages
Consultations may be provided in commonly spoken Ugandan languages to improve patient understanding and communication.
5. Investigations and Prescriptions
Patients may conduct investigations at any recognised facility.
Results may be uploaded through the K.T Website or Mobile App.
